IE Code Registration
Import Export Code is a 10-digit code which is same as the PAN number of the business. It is issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). Anyone in the Import-Export business has to compulsorily take and Import Export Code before starting their operations. However there are certain exemptions to it such as:
- The person importing or exporting goods for personal purposes need not obtain IEC.
- Traders registered under GST are exempted from the requirement to obtain IEC.
- Departments and Ministries of the Central government as well as notified charitable institutions are also exempted from this requirement.
IEC code is required at the following instances by the importer / exporter:
- Sending money abroad
- Receiving foreign currency in bank account
- Exporting goods
- Clearance of goods on importing
What are the steps required to get an IE code?
- Fill in the application form in the specified format i.e the Aayaat Niryaat Form no. 2A (ANF2A) and file it with the Regional office of DGFT.
- Submit the documents required with ANF2A.
- File the application along with the documents at the DGFT portal and pay the required fees.
- After your application is processed, you will receive a soft copy of the IE code from the government.
Documents required:
- PAN Card
- Aadhar or copy of Passport for an individual
- Cancelled cheque of the company’s current bank account
- Rent agreement or electricity bill
