Employees Provident Fund
Employees Provident Fund (EPF) or Provident Fund as it is generally called is a type of retirement benefit available to the salaried employees from their employer’s end. It is a type of retirement pension plan where both employer and employee contribute a certain percentage of money from their monthly salary so as to reap the benefits later after retirement.
Who are required to take compulsory registration under EPF?
Organisations with more than 20 employees are compulsorily required to take registration under the EPF Act within 30 days from attaining the strength. However, new companies incorporated with effect from 15th February, 2020 get simultaneously registered under the EPF Act also. However, their liability to contribute EPF from employee’s salary or to submit PF returns arises only after crossing the threshold limit of employees for registration i.e 20 employees.
EPF registration Procedure for employers
For getting registered, the employer need to follow the following procedure:

Visit the official site of EPFO Act i.e. www.epfindia.gov.in and click on the icon which says “Establishment Registration”.
- Click on the “Sign Up” button
- Now you will be asked to enter your Name, Email, Mobile Number, and Verification Code. Afetr entering correct data in these field click on “Sign Up”
- On the next page you will get an option which says “Registration for EPFO-ESIC”. Click on that.
- Next select the option which reads “Apply for New Registration”.
- The next click on the option which prompts Employees’ State Insurance Act, 1948’ and ‘Employees’ Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provision Act, 1952’.
- Click on the “Submit” button
- You will be redirected to a new page where you will have to enter all the details of employer. Attach the necessary documents and click on Preview.
- Now check all the fields entered by you and click on the “Submit” button
- You will be prompted for DSC Registration
- After successful completion of “DSC Registration” you will receive an email from Shram Suvidha confirming your registration
What is UAN number?
Universal Account Number (UAN) is a unique 12 digit number allotted to every employee by their employer registered under the EPF Act. UAN number does not change with the change in employment. That is to say, the employee can get his previous PF UAN number linked to the new employer in the event of switching jobs. UAN number records the total PF deposited against the employee’s account by his employers and other necessary information.
What is the Due Date of filing the EPF Return?
Every employer registered under the EPF Act is required to file monthly return by the 25th of the next month and an annual return by the 25th of April each year.
What is the Due Date of Payment of paying PF to the government?
The Employer needs to pay PF by the 15th of every month to the Government treasury.
